The media has been getting very excited about a new college planned for London from 2012. The planned private college, which aims to rival Oxford and Cambridge, is being launched by leading academics including philosopher A C Grayling, biologist Richard Dawkins and historian Sir David Cannadine. The New College of the Humanities is planning to charge fees of £18,000 and says it will teach “gifted” undergraduates and prepare them for degrees from the University of London .
Given higher levels of tuition fees, it is clear that potential undergraduates will be examining much more closely the value offered by individual university courses. That means they will be considering overseas institutions, both in Europe and the US, as well as private ‘universities’ such as the New College of the Humanities.
